In mathematics, students are taught according to South African mathematics curriculum which builds learners capacity to problem solve, and the assessments will require learners to employ critical thinking to demonstrate success. This will build an awareness of the important role that mathematics plays in real life situations including the personal development of the learner hence, learn to listen, communicate, think, reason logically and apply the mathematical knowledge gained.
Literacy development is of prime importance as required by the South African curriculum. Learning is based on learners being able to read and write. These skills are then fostered through the learning of other subjects like life skills and creative arts.
